NOTES: The Type 87 is an early Japanese Army gas mask that is very similar to the US A.T. gas mask, with internal Tissot type tubes in place to help reduce fogging of the glass eye pieces. The face piece was made from a rubberized fabric with a single opening in the chin area for the inlet/outlet assembly.

NOTES: This early Japanese gas mask was most likely used by both the military and civil defense personnel. The mask was made from a rubberized fabric materiel. These types of Japanese masks are quite rare, and are prone to rapid deterioration when exposed to harsh temperatures.

FUNCTION: Civil Defense/Military
LMàG REFERENCE CODE: JA-002
NOTES: This early Japanese mask from W.W.II was most likely used for civilian duty but also may have been issued to the Japanese army. It is different from the later Model 99 in that it has a fabric covered rubber face piece instead of the usual tan rubber face piece. The Type 1/Model A was also issued with a corrugated rubber breathing tube with an attached filter instead of the filter attached directly to the face piece.

USAGE: Japan
FUNCTION: Civilian/Industrial
LMàG REFERENCE CODE: JA-005
NOTES: This rare Japanese mask was most likely used by civilians for industrial applications. It is very close in appearance to other Japanese civilian duty gas masks from the W.W.II era. However, this mask was made of a black rubber instead of the typical orange or tan rubber which was used on other more common gas masks during this period. In addition, the head harness configuration is also unlike other Japanese W.W.II era masks.

FUNCTION: Civil Defense
LMàG REFERENCE CODE: JA-006
NOTES: During W.W.II, the Japanese made several different types of gas masks for civilians and civil defense. This mask, came in two versions: one with the filter attached directly to the face piece and another with a larger filter attached via a corrugated rubber breathing tube. It is likely that they served different purposes, and it seems that the version with the tube and large filter attached is quite scarce. Most Japanese civil defense masks will be found with some stamped markings on the forehead of the face piece, and most are usually found suffering from dry rot.

NOTES: The W.W.II Japanese Imperial Navy gas mask is one of the most sought after Japanese war time items today. Most of these masks perished at the bottom of the Pacific, making them quite scarce in any condition. This version is unlike the other more common versions in that the eye pieces were shaped differently, it used a different elastic head harness and the speech diaphragm surface is slightly different than the typical type. These masks were typically carried in a large case, which housed the entire unit and sometimes extra supplies.

NOTES: This Japanese W.W.II era mask is very similar to the above Navy versions. It may have been used as a Navy mask or possibly as a standard combat mask for infantry. For the most part, the mask is identical to the above version with the Bakelite exhale valve, however, this mask used a black rubber face piece and a black rubber breathing tube. These black rubber versions seem to be even more scarce than the fabric types.

FREQUENCY: Scarce
USAGE: Japan
FUNCTION: Civilian
LMàG REFERENCE CODE: JA-016
NOTES: During W.W.II, several similarly styled civilian gas masks were manufactured in Japan. The earliest of these types was made of a thick canvas type material as opposed to rubber which was used for later versions. The mask had a head harness made of wide fabric straps which were adjustable around the chin area on each side. It featured a single plastic eye shied and a small fixed filter cartridge on the front of the face piece. This configuration was used on at least two other Japanese civilian gas masks from the W.W.II era. |

FUNCTION: Civilian
LMàG REFERENCE CODE: JA-018
NOTES: During W.W.II, several similarly styled civilian gas masks were manufactured in Japan. This type was most likely manufactured toward the end of the war when Japan was most concerned about Allied air raids. This mask is basically the same as the earlier green type but was made of a darker rubber with an exhale valve integrated into the left side of the face piece. This model is quite a bit more scarce than the earlier types as it was probably manufactured in smaller numbers.

| NOTES: This post war Japanese mask was most likely used for civilian purposes, but may have also been used for industrial applications. | NOTES: Not many of these newer Japanese gas masks have been exported from Japan. It is possible that the mask is called a "TS" gas mask but it is uncertain. It is also possible that this mask was designed for industrial application due to the bright colored filter canister. A very similar mask was also manufactured in Japan but with a large round filter attached to the side of the face piece instead of a corrugated rubber tube. |
