NOTES: This strange mask was used during the Vietnam War by the Vietcong in an attempt to protect against GI tear gas, which was frequently used to flush the Vietcong from their intricate system of underground tunnels. The mask is made of a thin plastic materiel, and most likely did not offer much protection. The eye pieces were made of an equally thin layer of clear plastic, and a large piece of cloth was sewn onto the front of the face piece to filter out the gas. This mask is quite scarce today, as it is prone to tearing and most were likely disposed of.

FREQUENCY: Scarce
USAGE: Vietnam
FUNCTION: Military
LMàG REFERENCE CODE: VN-003
NOTES: This particular gas mask was fabricated from an olive drab, plastic shower cap. A rectangular opening was cut into the material so that a visor made from clear plastic could be stitched in place. A fabric pad was also stitched over another opening cut into the side of the shower cap to act as a filter. These masks were makeshift devices used by the Vietcong to protect against GI tear gas. Because of their fragile nature, few examples survive today.
